God Sparks

This is the page where we have some fun while we use our imagination to think creatively. We have only one rule. You must never color inside the lines! This is an outside-the-lines kind of website!

Genesis 1 tells the story of how God created the heavens and the earth. Then he created people in His own image. So, we were created by God to have the same creative spark that God used to create all things. Wow! That’s why I call this fun page God Sparks.

Silly Jokes

Silly jokes are good for getting us loosened up so our brains won’t be so up tight that it only thinks of things we’ve already thought of. What fun is that? We need to let our brains laugh and get all those old cobwebs cleaned out so it can start sparking new ideas.

What happened when the turkey got into a fight?
He got the stuffing knocked out of him.

What side of the turkey has the most feathers?
The outside.

Why did the turkey cross the road?
It was the chickens day off.

Who can jump the highest, a turkey or the Empire State Building?
A turkey. Buildings can't jump.

I know, those were too silly. You can do much better. Maybe you could send me your favorite silly jokes and we could put them here on the webpage.

Turkey

Pumpkin Bread

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl cream 3 cups sugar with 1 cup vegetable oil.
Add 4 beaten eggs and 1 (16 oz.) can pumpkin. Beat well.

In another bowl sift together all dry ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves

Grate the orange rind of an orange very fine and put into 2/3 cup of orange juice. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the orange juice. Mix well.
Fold in 1 cup pecan pieces and 1 cup golden raisins.

Grease and flour two 9X5 loaf pans. (Or 4 smaller gift-sized loaf pans.)
Pour the batter into the two pans.

Cook for 1 ½ hours. If the edges begin to get too brown before they are done take them out of the oven and very carefully cover the edges with tin foil.
Do not burn yourself!

(If you use the small pans they should be done in 1 hour.)
To check for doneness stick a straw or a thin knife or a skewer into the center of the loaf. If it is done the straw will come out clean.

Remove from oven. Let stand for about 5 or 10 minutes.
Turn out of the pans onto a cooling rack.

Yummy if you eat it right out of the oven. Also great with cream cheese for breakfast. For dessert put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or sprinkle with sifted confectioners sugar. For a snack just grab a slice and eat it on the go!

Color Sheet

Because I was an art teacher I never liked color sheets. I always wanted my students to draw things themselves. But since this is an illustration of my book I have put a color sheet of the Magi here for you to color. If you read the book you can read what colors each piece of clothing is supposed to be. But don’t worry about staying in the lines! And if you read the book and see the Magi in your mind a little differently I would love for you to send me your picture.

Last month in our art lesson we began to work on design.

Since it is November and Thanksgiving is here Christian and Jacob decided to design turkeys.

First they put their hand down on the paper and draw around it. They decided to color their turkeys with both crayons and felt tip markers.

See how colorful their turkeys are!
Christian takes his time cutting out his turkey.
Christian and Jacob glued their turkeys to construction paper to make a picture.
They could have used their turkeys to design tee shirts. Maybe we'll do that next time.

For our second design project we are going to design a tile for a floor or a quilt square, whichever you would like to do.

First you'll need to select three colors. I chose three shades of brown, light, medium, and dark. You might want to choose three different colors. You'll need a ruler, a pencil, and a pair of scissors.

On the wrong side of the paper measure two inch squares and cut them out. Begin to arrange them into a pattern that pleases you.

As you can see I only cut out two of the colors and used the third color to make my pattern on. I also cut some triangles from the squares. When your pattern is like you like it glue it onto the paper.

After I made a tile design I decided to make a quilt design! You can do the same thing!

Since all the leaves are turning color now we should do something to bring the color inside.

All you need for leaf rubbings are leaves, crayons and white paper.

Turn the leaves over so that the back side is up. This way you will have all the veins of the leaves up to make your design. Choose the crayons you wish to use and cover the leaves with the paper. Thin paper is best.

Here is a finished leaf rubbing. They are beautiful mounted on colored construction paper. You can display them for Thanksgiving!

1biscuits

Jacob makes his biscuit snake.
After Christian made his biscuit on a stick he had enough dough left over to make little Noah's ark biscuits. These biscuits on a stick will be delicious with butter and jam or with camp stew or even camp beans.

The best food you'll ever taste is the food you cook outside on a campfire. And what is better to have with your camp stew than biscuits on a stick?

The first thing to do is find a green stick. You can't use a dry one because it will burn in the fire. After you find the prefect stick you need to skin the thin bark off with a knife. Sometimes the bark will peel off very easily with your fingers. You can use canned biscuits (or rolls) or you can do like Christian and Jacob and mix up your own biscuits.

Biscuits Recipe:

Into a medium sized bowl place 1 cup of flour.
Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder.
Add a pinch of salt.
Use a pastry blender to cut in 2 Tablespoons of butter.
Add about 2/3 cups of buttermilk. Beat well.

Sprinkle flour onto a piece of waxed paper and place the dough on top of the flour.
Sprinkle more flour on top of the dough.
Very carefully turn and pat the dough. Add more flour if it is too sticky.

Roll the dough into a snake.
Twist the snake around the green stick.
Bake over hot coals after the campfire has burned down. Be careful not to burn.

Eat with plenty of butter and jelly!

there's more!

Here is a project that lets you bring the outdoors inside.
I love this project because you can have spring in the middle of winter.

First you will need a clear jar or tall dish. If you want a really large garden you can use a fish bowl.

If you use a jar you may want to decorate the edge. You can do that in any way you like. We are using ribbon. We glue the ribbon around the edge and make a bow.

Cover the bottom of the jar with marbles.
Jacob watches as Christian places a flowering bulb in the jar and holds it steady so Jacob can fill the jar up with the rest of the marbles.

After Christian put enough water in the jar to cover the roots they put it in the livingroom so they can watch it grow. Soon the roots will grow, the little green stem will reach up and we will have a flower blooming
.

For another outdoor project to bring indoors here is a real Thanksgiving project that everyone can do.
pot2 pot2a

All you need is a sweet potato, a jar, and some toothpicks or skewers that have sharp points and have been cut off. Christian is old enough to place three skewers in the sides of the potato.

After Christian filled the jar almost full of water Jacob placed the sweet potato into the jar. The skewers let the potato sit up on top of the jar with only one end in the water.

It needs a little bit more water. But soon the little sprouts on top will become leaves and we will enjoy a beautiful green plant indoors in the winter.
