God Sparks

This is the page where we have some fun while we use our imagination to think creatively. We have only one rule. You must never color inside the lines! This is an outside-the-lines kind of website!

Genesis 1 tells the story of how God created the heavens and the earth. Then he created people in His own image. So, we were created by God to have the same creative spark that God used to create all things. Wow! That’s why I call this fun page God Sparks.

Silly Jokes

Silly jokes are good for getting us loosened up so our brains won’t be so up tight that it only thinks of things we’ve already thought of. What fun is that? We need to let our brains laugh and get all those old cobwebs cleaned out so it can start sparking new ideas.

What do you get if you cross a bee with a skunk?
An animal that stinks and stings!

What does a queen bee do when she burps?
Issues a royal pardon!

Why do bees hum?
Because they've forgotten the words!

What did the bee say to the flower?

Hello honey!

I know, those were too silly. You can do much better. Maybe you could send me your favorite silly jokes and we could put them here on the webpage.

Recipe

One of my grandsons loves to make the cornbread for the family meal. Corn bread is easy to make and especially good in the fall and winter with soup or beans. Of course your mom or dad will want to help with the oven part but you can do the rest. It's easy and fun and so delicious!

Corn Bread
Set oven rack in the center of the oven.
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
Place 3 tablespoons of butter in a black pan or black iron skillet and melt in the oven. (Watch it. Don't let it burn!)
Place 1 1/2 cup stone ground yellow cornmeal in a medium sized bowl.
Add: 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
      2 teaspoons aluminum-free baking powder
      the melted butter
      1 large free-range egg
      1 cup buttermilk
Mix well.
Grease the black pan or skillet with melted butter and pour the batter into the pan.
Cook at 450 degrees for about 25 minutes or until brown.
Butter and eat! Yum!

Color Sheet

Because I was an art teacher I never liked color sheets. I always wanted my students to draw things themselves. But since this is an illustration of my book I have put a color sheet of the Magi here for you to color. If you read the book you can read what colors each piece of clothing is supposed to be. But don’t worry about staying in the lines! And if you read the book and see the Magi in your mind a little differently I would love for you to send me your picture.

First design lesson:
Gather lots of different things that you can use to trace around to make different sizes of circles.

Cut lots of different sizes of black circles.

Make your own design by arranging the circles on a piece of white paper.

Feel free to overlap, stack and even to go off the sides of the paper, trimming the edges.

When you are happy with your design glue the circles onto the paper.

Let's make stuff

Second Design Lesson:
Cut several different sizes of circles from blue paper.

Using a ruler cut several different sizes of squares of red paper.

Cut several different sizes of yellow triangles.

Arrange them in a pleasing design on a piece of black paper.

Overlap, stack, go off the edges of the paper as desired.

Glue the geometric figures onto the paper.

Third Design Lesson:
Use any geometric figures and colors desired to make a design pleasing to you.

Add lines, bars, and dots to enhance your design.

Outdoor Craft - Lashing

Lashing is very useful if you are going to be camping a great deal. It's also fun to do. You can build anything if you know how to lash properly. One week one of my Scout troops built an entire camp on top of a mountain for the younger troops to use. We built tables, stools, a tripod to hang pots from to cook, a latrine and various other pieces of furniture. Lashing is very simple to do. All you need are two poles and some string, cord or rope. Lashing does not use knots so it is very important to understand the proper way to begin and end in order for your furniture not to fall apart!

#1
1. Lay the two poles side by side making sure you have enough overlap to cause the lashing to hold them. Make a loop with your cord the entire length of the portion to be lashed.

#3
3.
When the entire portion is lashed or wound around the poles cut the cord, allowing a piece at least as long as the lashed length, and thread it through the loop at the top of the lashed area.

#5
5.
There you have it - two poles lashed together.

#2
2. Begin to wind the cord around the two poles neatly and tightly.

#4
4.
Using the other end of the cord gently pull the cut end of the cord to at least half-way down the lashed area and trim the other end of the cord.

If you use four poles lashed at the ends into a square and then add other poles across them you can make a table. You can begin by lashing it to two young trees or you can make legs and lash cross poles to the legs to make them steady. See what you can make with your new-found skill!
